Israel, Palestine, Forgiveness, Compassion, Peace, Freedom, Democracy, Politicians, Totalitarianism, Propaganda and Evil: What would Hannah Arendt say?

Israel, Palestine, Forgiveness, Compassion, Peace, Freedom, Democracy, Politicians, Totalitarianism, Propaganda and Evil: What would Hannah Arendt say?

Greg Krasovsky

"Forgiveness is the key to action and freedom."

"No punishment has ever possessed enough power of deterrence to prevent the commission of crimes.
On the contrary, whatever the punishment, once a specific crime has appeared for the first time, its reappearance is more likely than its initial emergence could ever have been."

"The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil."

These quotes of Hannah Arendt, as well as many other quotes that you'll find below, are very relevant today, as we watch and analyze

1. Hamas' "military incursion" into Israel on 10/7/23 and its actions afterwards:

     - horrific and unjustifiable crimes against humanity and terrorist acts against ordinary Israeli civilians (including the elderly, women & children), including cold-blood murder by execution;
    - war crimes against Israeli soldiers and police who should have been taken prisoner and treated humanely instead of being tortured and executed when no longer armed or a credible threat to Hamas militants;
   - indiscriminate launch of unguided (imprecise, albeit deadly) missiles into Israel's civilian population centers, causing unjustified and criminal deaths of civilians (non-combatants);

  - Hamas' iron grip over the Gaza Strip since 2005 and continuous indoctrination of its population and especially Palestinian children to hate Zionists, Israelis and all Jews to such an extent that

-- the expulsion of all Jews from greater Palestine is warranted,
-- the Existence of Israel as a legitimate state must be terminated and
-- the murder of women, children and the elderly becomes acceptable, desirable and almost mandatory

to ensure the freedom and prosperity of the Palestinian People and their future independent country-state.

2.  Israel's current war crimes from 10/8/23 to present in the Gaza Strip:

   - massive bombing, missile attacks and artillery strikes in Gaza that have killed innocent Palestinian civilians,

   - failure to organize and ensure the evacuation of civilians (non-combatants),

   - using the deprivation of electricity and water as collective punishment and part of a "siege"

And I'm not even going to touch human right violations in the treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza by the Israeli government, its armed forces, the police, state security and intelligence agencies from 1948 to the present.

P.S. On 10/7/23 Hamas confirmed that it is a terrorist organization which constitutes a clear and present danger to Israeli national security and must be dealt with accordingly -- ruthlessly, thoroughly but legally.

Whether you like it or not, countries, their governments, law enforcement and security agencies and armed forces are always held to higher standards (rule of law) than terrorist organizations (even those with any degree of government support & control, which means all terrorist organizations).

As such, Palestinian civilians (non-combatants) in Gaza and the West Bank, even those who voted for  & support Hamas, including relatives of Hamas terrorists and war criminals, are entitled to legal protections afforded them by all applicable domestic and international law, including binding U.N. resolutions, Geneva Conventions and other conventions & treaties outlawing the use of certain weaponry, munitions and war tactics.

What do you think?

Hannah Arendt Quotes:

The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.

Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core.

No punishment has ever possessed enough power of deterrence to prevent the commission of crimes. On the contrary, whatever the punishment, once a specific crime has appeared for the first time, its reappearance is more likely than its initial emergence could ever have been.

No cause is left but the most ancient of all, the one, in fact, that from the beginning of our history has determined the very existence of politics, the cause of freedom versus tyranny.

Power and violence are opposites; where the one rules absolutely, the other is absent. Violence appears where power is in jeopardy, but left to its own course it ends in power's disappearance.

The more dubious and uncertain an instrument violence has become in international relations, the more it has gained in reputation and appeal in domestic affairs, specifically in the matter of revolution.

Only the mob and the elite can be attracted by the momentum of totalitarianism itself. The masses have to be won by propaganda.

The chief qualification of a mass leader has become unending infallibility; he can never admit an error.

Under conditions of tyranny it is far easier to act than to think.

Revolutionaries do not make revolutions. The revolutionaries are those who know when power is lying in the street and then they can pick it up

The most radical revolutionary will become a conservative the day after the revolution.

War has become a luxury that only small nations can afford.

Forgiveness is the key to action and freedom.

“Good can be radical; evil can never be radical, it can only be extreme, for it possesses neither depth nor any demonic dimension yet--and this is its horror--it can spread like a fungus over the surface of the earth and lay waste the entire world. Evil comes from a failure to think.”
― Hannah Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil

“In an ever-changing, incomprehensible world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and that nothing was true.
... Mass propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow.
The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.”

― Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist.”
― Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

“Before mass leaders seize the power to fit reality to their lies, their propaganda is marked by its extreme contempt for facts as such, for in their opinion fact depends entirely on the power of man who can fabricate it.”
― Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

“When all are guilty, no one is; confessions of collective guilt are the best possible safeguard against the discovery of culprits, and the very magnitude of the crime the best excuse for doing nothing. ”
― Hannah Arendt

“The aim of totalitarian education has never been to instill convictions but to destroy the capacity to form any.”
― Hannah Arendt

“And the distinction between violent and non-violent action is that the former is exclusively bent upon the destruction of the old, and the latter is chiefly concerned with the establishment of something new.”

Evil thrives on apathy and cannot exist without it.
- Hannah Arendt

Politically, the weakness of the argument has always been that those who choose the lesser evil forget very quickly that they chose evil.
- Hannah Arendt

This inability to think created the possibility for many ordinary men to commit evil deeds on a gigantic scale, the like of which had never been seen before. The manifestation of the wind of thought is not knowledge but the ability to tell right from wrong, beautiful from ugly. And I hope that thinking gives people the strength to prevent catastrophes in these rare moments when the chips are down.
- Hannah Arendt

The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.
Hannah Arendt

The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth, and truth be defamed as lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world - and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end - is being destroyed.
- Hannah Arendt

The aim of totalitarian education has never been to instill convictions but to destroy the capacity to form any.
- Hannah Arendt

Politically speaking, tribal nationalism [patriotism] always insists that its own people are surrounded by 'a world of enemies' - 'one against all' - and that a fundamental difference exists between this people and all others.
It claims its people to be unique, individual, incompatible with all others, and denies theoretically the very possibility of a common mankind long before it is used to destroy the humanity of man.
- Hannah Arendt

Violence is an expression of impotence.
- Hannah Arendt

The greater the bureaucratization of public life, the greater will be the attraction of violence. In a fully developed bureaucracy there is nobody left with whom one can argue, to whom one can represent grievances, on whom the pressures of power can be exerted.
Bureaucracy is the form of government in which everybody is deprived of political freedom, of the power to act; for the rule by Nobody is not no-rule, and where all are equally powerless we have a tyranny without a tyrant.
- Hannah Arendt

Truthfulness has never been counted among the political virtues, and lies have always been regarded as justifiable tools in political dealings.
- Hannah Arendt

Political questions are far too serious to be left to the politicians.

"No government exclusively based on the means of violence has ever existed.
Even the totalitarian ruler, whose chief instrument of rule is torture, needs a power basis—the secret police and its net of informers.
Only the development of robot soldiers, which, as previously mentioned, would eliminate the human factor completely and, conceivably, permit one man with a push button to destroy whomever he pleased, could change this fundamental ascendancy of power over violence."
—Hannah Arendt, “On Violence.”

“And even if Jews were to win the war...[t]he ‘victorious’ Jews would live surrounded by an entirely hostile Arab population, secluded inside ever-threatened borders, absorbed with physical self-defense to a degree that would submerge all other interests and activities.”
-Hannah Arendt, The Jewish Writings, eds. Jerome Kohn and Ron Feldman, New York: Schocken Books, 2007, p.396

"Violence can destroy power; it is utterly incapable of creating it."
-Hannah Arendt, On Violence

"The end of rebellion is liberation, while the end of revolution is the foundation of freedom."
  -Hannah Arendt, On Revolution

"If this practice [of totalitarianism] is compared with that of tyranny, it seems as if a way had been found to set the desert itself in motion, to let loose a sand storm that could cover all parts of the inhabited earth. The conditions under which we exist today in the field of politics are indeed threatened by these devastating sand storms."
-Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

"Until now the totalitarian belief that everything is possible seems to have proved only that everything can be destroyed.
Yet, in their effort to prove that everything is possible, totalitarian regimes have discovered without knowing it   that there are crimes which men can neither punish nor forgive.
    When the impossible was made possible it became the unpunishable, unforgivable absolute evil which could no longer be understood and explained by the evil motives of self-interest, greed, covetousness, resentment, lust for power, and cowardice;
and which therefore anger could not revenge, love could not endure, friendship could not forgive.
Just as the victims in the death factories or the holes of oblivion are no longer "human" in the eyes of their executioners, so this newest species of criminals is beyond the pale even of solidarity in human sinfulness."
-Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism

"Whatever the source of moral knowledge might be—divine commandments or moral reason—every sane man, it was assumed, carried within himself a voice that tells him what is right and what is wrong, and this regardless of the law of the land and regardless of the voices of his fellowmen."
-Hannah Arendt, Some Questions of Moral Philosophy, in Responsibility and Judgment, p. 61.

"The alternative to forgiveness, but by no means its opposite, is punishment, and both have in common that they attempt to put an end to something that without interference could go on endlessly.
It is therefore quite significant, a structural element in the realm of human affairs, that men are unable to forgive what they cannot punish and that they are unable to punish what has turned out to be unforgivable."
- Hannah Arendt, The Human Condition

“The highest laws of the land (America) are not only the constitution and constitutional laws, but also contracts.”
-Hannah Arendt, Denktagebuch, p. 131

"It can be dangerous to tell the truth: “There will always be One against All, one person against all others. [This is so] not because One is terribly wise and All are terribly foolish, but because the process of thinking and researching, which finally yields truth, can only be accomplished by an individual person. In its singularity or duality, one human being seeks and finds – not the truth (Lessing) –, but some truth.”
-Hannah Arendt, Denktagebuch, Book XXIV, No. 21

"In a head-on clash between violence and power, the outcome is hardly in doubt.
Nowhere is the self-defeating factor in the victory of violence over power more evident than in the use of terror to maintain domination, about whose weird successes and eventual failures we know perhaps more than any generation before us. Violence can destroy power; it is utterly incapable of creating it."

"The moment we no longer have a free press, anything can happen.
What makes it possible for a totalitarian or any other dictatorship to rule is that people are not informed; how can you have an opinion if you are not informed?
If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer.
This is because lies, by their very nature, have to be changed, and a lying government has constantly to rewrite its own history.
On the receiving end you get not only one lie — a lie which you could go on for the rest of your days — but you get a great number of lies, depending on how the political wind blows.
And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and to judge.
And with such a people you can then do what you please."

"A mixture of gullibility and cynicism had been an outstanding characteristic of mob mentality before it became an everyday phenomenon of masses.
In an ever-changing, incomprehensible, world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything is possible and that nothing was true.
The mixture in itself was remarkable enough, because it spelled the end of the illusion that gullibility was a weakness of unsuspecting primitive souls and cynism the vice of superior and refined minds.
Mass propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow.

Hannah Arendt

By Wikipedia

Hannah Arendt (/ˈɛərənt, ˈɑːr-/,[12][13] US also /əˈrɛnt/,[14] German: [ˌhana ˈaːʁənt] ⓘ;[15] born Johanna Arendt; 14 October 1906 – 4 December 1975) was a German-born American historian and political philosopher.

She was one of the most influential political theorists of the 20th century.[16][17][18]

Her works cover a broad range of topics, but she is best known for those dealing with the nature of power and evil, as well as politics, direct democracy, authority, and totalitarianism.

In the popular mind she is best remembered for the controversy surrounding the trial of Adolf Eichmann, her attempt to explain how ordinary people become actors in totalitarian systems, which was considered by some an apologia, and for the phrase "the banality of evil."

She is commemorated by institutions and journals devoted to her thinking, the Hannah Arendt Prize for political thinking, and on stamps, street names and schools, amongst other things.

Arendt was born to a Jewish family in Linden (now a district of Hanover) in 1906.

When she was three, her family moved to the East Prussian capital of Königsberg for her father's health care.

Paul Arendt had contracted syphilis in his youth, but was thought to be in remission when Arendt was born. He died when she was seven.

Arendt was raised in a politically progressive, secular family, her mother being an ardent Social Democrat.

After completing secondary education in Berlin, Arendt studied at the University of Marburg under Martin Heidegger, with whom she had a four-year affair.[19]

She obtained her doctorate in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in 1929.

Her dissertation was entitled Love and Saint Augustine and her supervisor was the existentialist philosopher Karl Jaspers.

Hannah Arendt married Günther Stern in 1929, but soon began to encounter increasing antisemitism in 1930s Nazi Germany. In 1933, the year Adolf Hitler came to power, Arendt was arrested and briefly imprisoned by the Gestapo for performing illegal research into antisemitism.

On release, she fled Germany, living in Czechoslovakia and Switzerland before settling in Paris. There she worked for Youth Aliyah, assisting young Jews to emigrate to the British Mandate of Palestine.

She was stripped of her German citizenship in 1937. Divorcing Stern that year, she then married Heinrich Blücher in 1940.

When Germany invaded France that year she was detained by the French as an alien.

She escaped and made her way to the United States in 1941 via Portugal. She settled in New York, which remained her principal residence for the rest of her life.

She became a writer and editor and worked for the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, becoming an American citizen in 1950.

With the publication of The Origins of Totalitarianism in 1951, her reputation as a thinker and writer was established and a series of works followed.

These included the books The Human Condition in 1958, as well as Eichmann in Jerusalem and On Revolution in 1963.

She taught at many American universities, while declining tenure-track appointments.

She died suddenly of a heart attack in 1975, at the age of 69, leaving her last work, The Life of the Mind, unfinished.

One of the few female philosophers of the 20th century whose works are recognized as classics of political thought, the founder of the theory of totalitarianism and the author of the expression “banality of evil”

👤Hannah Arendt is a German-American philosopher and journalist of Jewish origin, political theorist, historian and public figure.

She was educated at the Universities of Marburg, Freiburg and Heidelberg, and studied with Martin Heidegger and Karl Jaspers.

▪️She was one of the first to talk about the true nature of evil and comprehensively studied this phenomenon, which, in her opinion, is not always hidden in a person’s desire to do something terrible, but is much more often associated with the refusal of thought and one’s own responsibility for one’s choice.

Arendt's legacy includes more than 450 works, diverse in issues, but united by the idea of comprehension of modernity (“thinking about what we are doing”).

▪️She introduced the concept of “banality of evil,” by which she meant thoughtless submission to laws that were not just inhumane, but directed against the very foundations of life.

Her theses, formulated in reports from Jerusalem from the trial of Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann, and then in a separately published book, influenced the course of the entire post-war discussion about the Holocaust and the role of the individual in the most terrible crime committed against humanity.

▪️The essence of these theses is that evil is committed by ordinary people who accept the order established in society as the norm and conscientiously fulfill the obligations prescribed to them by the current law.

The term “banality of evil” has become one of the cornerstones in modern philosophy, and passions around Hannah Arendt’s controversial theses have not yet subsided.

Hannah Arendt believed that there is only one way to resist universal evil: we must learn to think critically.

🔻Today [October 14th] is the birthday of this extraordinary personality, a female philosopher.

If you know the truth, at this point you have a responsibility to speak it...

"If you know the truth, at this point you have a responsibility to speak it, because this is a numbers game and the dark thrives on good people doing and saying nothing!

This is an all hands on deck moment for humanity, and they're counting on enough people staying silent...PROVE THEM WRONG."

Greg Krasovsky:

Those of us who were born and/or lived in the Soviet Union know the pervasiveness and dangers of government propaganda.

Unfortunately, the majority of people in the United States, Canada, UK, European Union, Australia, New Zealand and other G-20 countries don't realize that corporate-owned mainstream and social media are no different than old Soviet State media (like TASS or Pravda) when it comes to disseminating the official version of events -- one that their corporate stakeholders want you to believe and one that may be the opposite of the truth.

And these stakeholders -- giant trans-national (global) financial-industrial groups & their owners who control & own not just news & entertainment media, but also political parties, politicians and governments (through elected & appointed government officials) -- learned a long time ago that the best way to protect the governments & politicians that they own from public scrutiny and accountability before their citizens (voters, taxpayers and consumers) is though use and control of news and entertainment media.

So if you want to know the truth, or, as they say, the other side of the truth (as though truth is like a coin), about politics, business & economics, law, military affairs and culture in or related to

- Ukraine,
- Russia and BRICS countries
- The United States of America, and

- Anywhere else in the world where the above countries have interests & foreign relations,

then you can continue to be spoon-fed by

- CNN
- MSNBC
- FOX

- AP
- Reuters

- Washington Post
- New York Times
- Wall Street Journal

or you can read & watch (DAILY, if possible!) news coverage and analysis that I believe to be truthful through my blog project:

Last, why should you trust me more than the main-stream news media or government officials?

Because

- I don't get paid for doing this!

- I don't have any sponsors or advertisers!

- I spend my own time & money on The Ukrainian-Russian-American Observer project!

- I love regular, normal, law-abiding and G-d fearing people world-wide, including in Ukraine, Russia, America, Nigeria, Israel (Jews & Palestinians) and want to help them be free, well-informed, good, healthy and prosperous!

- I don't like corrupt, lying and evil politicians & government officials. I like their handlers, pimps and owners even less!

- I believe that knowing the truth, no matter how hurtful it may be even about our own groups, countries and governments, will set us free, enlighten us and help us keep big government and big money/business in check!

- I write, post and re-post only things (facts & opinions) that I believe to be true based on my personal knowledge, experience, competence and confirmation from people that I know & trust to tell me the truth, no matter how ugly or crazy it may be.

- I agree with the statement that all it takes for Evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing - especially if they don't know what's going on, including by being misled through propaganda, censorship and intimidation.

- I believe in the freedom of speech (but not the freedom to insult or slander other people & groups) and in listening carefully and respectfully to your opponents, as often you will learn from them more about the shortcomings of your own group than from your allies & fellow travelers.

What's worse, taking a photograph of an injured person, even a child, or a dead body in a war zone or a disaster area

- primarily for the sake of photojournalism without providing available assistance (medical care, food, protection [from animal or human predators], shelter and/or evacuation)

   or

- for propaganda / information warfare / fake news?

Sadly, I've seen a lot of "vulture" photo & video news coverage from Ukraine since the winter of 2013-2014 and the start of the civil war in Eastern Ukraine in the spring of 2014.

Some photos and video segments have been staged and faked.

What's worse, the vast majority of it has been by Ukrainian and Western news media.

This is based on my objective neutral observations and analysis.

So why did these Ukrainian and Western media journalists and news outlets violate the precepts of objective journalism, aside from being owned & controlled by establishment financial industrial groups that in turn control governments, political parties and politicians?

To arouse sympathy in The Americas, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand for the Pro-American Ukrainian government, even when its military, security & law enforcement agencies, paramilitaries and mercenaries commit human rights violations, including war crimes and crimes against humanity.

And to arouse anger and hate against Pro-Russian Ukrainian citizens and Russia, as the country that provided them with military, economic, political and humanitarian assistance from 2014 to 2022 and then invaded Ukraine in February of 2022 to protect them and Russia's national security interests against NATO encroachment.

That's modern mainstream journalism today.

Show what's needed to arouse support for your sponsors' policies

💥 THE SECOND VULTURE:

"I PUT IT TO YOU THAT THERE WERE TWO VULTURES ON THAT DAY, ONE HAD A CAMERA"

In the 1990's there was a widely circulated photo of a vulture waiting for a starving little girl to die and feast on her corp.

That photo was taken during the 1993/94 famine in Sudan, by Kevin Carter, a South African photojournalist, who later won the Pulitzer Prize for this 'amazing shot'.*

*However, as Kevin Carter was savouring his feat and being celebrated on major news channels and networks worldwide for such an 'exceptional photographic skill', he lived just for a few months to enjoy his supposed achievement and fame, as he later got depressed and took his own life!*

*Kevin Carter's depression started, when during one of such interviews (a phone-in programme), someone called in and asked him what happened to the little girl.

He simply replied, "I didn't wait to find out after this shot, as I had a flight to catch..."

Then the caller said, "I put it to you that there were two vultures on that day, one had a camera".*

*Thus, his constant thought of that statement, later led to depression and he ultimately committed suicide.

Kevin Carter could have still been alive today and even much more famous, if he had just picked that little girl up and taken her to the United Nations Feeding Center, where she was attempting to reach or at least take her to somewhere safe.*

*Today, regrettably this is what is happening all around the world.

The world celebrates stupidity and inhumane act, at the detriment of other.

Kevin Carter should have taken the girl away from that place, which will cost him nothing, yet he didn't.

Here is the inhuman posture, "he had all time to take his shot, but he had no time to save the girl's life".*

*Thus, we must all understand that, the purpose of life, is to also touch lives. So are you too a Vulture.

In whatever we do, let humanity come first, before what we stand to gain out of the situation.

In all we do let's always think of others and how we can be of benefit to humanity, how we can lend a helping hand and wipe away tears.

Hence, when we seek knowledge, wealth, fame, skills or even positions, let's think of how we can use it to benefit the people and society at large.*

*Today, there is a lot of poverty in the land, so if our God Almighty has blessed you, be a blessing to others, extend a helping hand to those in need.

Remember, you giving, is also a way of appreciating divine blessings, bounties, and favour of God Almighty upon you.

Therefore, it is very important that we all should help the poor and needy, the orphans and widows amongst us, so that they can meet their needs.

Please don't be a Kevin Carter, be human and think humanity.*

💥 Beware, we humans are not humans, if we lack humaneness in all we do‼️

The vulture is waiting for the girl to die and to eat her.

The photograph was taken by South African photojournalist, Kevin Carter, while on assignment to Sudan.

He took his own life a couple of month later due to depression.

In March 1993 Kevin Carter made a trip to Sudan. Near the village of Ayod, Carter found a girl who had stopped to rest while struggling to a United Nations feeding centre, whereupon a vulture had landed nearby.

Careful not to disturb the bird, he waited for twenty minutes until the vulture was close enough, positioned himself for the best possible image and only then chased the vulture away.

At this point Carter was probably not yet aware that he had shot one of the most controversial photographs in the history of photojournalism.

“The parents of the children were busy taking food from the plane, so they had left their children only briefly while they collected the food.

This was the situation for the girl in the photo taken by Carter. A vulture landed behind the girl.

To get the two in focus, Carter approached the scene very slowly so as not to scare the vulture away and took a photo from approximately 10 meters. He took a few more photos before chasing the bird away”.

The photograph was sold to The New York Times where it appeared for the first time on March 26, 1993.

Practically overnight hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask whether the child had survived, leading the newspaper to run a special editor’s note saying the girl had enough strength to walk away from the vulture, but that her ultimate fate was unknown.

Because of this, Carter was bombarded with questions about why he did not help the girl, and only used her to take a photograph.

As with many dramatic photographs, Carter came under criticism for this shot.

The St. Petersburg Times in Florida wrote: “The man adjusting his lens to take just the right frame of her suffering, might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the scene”.

The attitude that public opinion condemned was not only that of taking the picture instead of chasing the vulture immediately away, but also the fact that he did not help the girl afterwards –as Carter explained later- leaving her in such a weak condition to continue the march by her self towards the feeding center.

However, Carter was working in a time when photojournalists were told not to touch famine victims for fear of spreading disease.

Carter estimated that there were twenty people per hour dying at the food center. The child was not unique.

Regardless, Carter often expressed regret that he had not done anything to help the girl, even though there was not much that he could have done.

In 1994, Kevin Carter won the Pulitzer prize for the disturbing photograph of a Sudanese child being stalked by a vulture.

That same year, Kevin Carter committed suicide. (story credit: BoredPanda) See less

The Vulture and the Little Girl
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vulture and the Little Girl, also known as The Struggling Girl, is a photograph by Kevin Carter which first appeared in The New York Times on 26 March 1993.

It is a photograph of a frail famine-stricken boy, initially believed to be a girl,[1] who had collapsed in the foreground with a hooded vulture eyeing him from nearby.

The child was reported to be attempting to reach a United Nations feeding centre about a half mile away in Ayod, Sudan (now South Sudan), in March 1993, and to have survived the incident.

The picture won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography award in 1994.

Carter took his own life four months after winning the prize.

This image has also been the subject of many criticisms for being a pornography of poverty.[2]

In Ayod

In 2011, the child's father revealed the child was actually a boy, Kong Nyong, and had been taken care of by the UN food aid station. Nyong had died in about 2007, of "fevers", according to his family.[1]
Publication and public reaction

In March 1993, The New York Times was seeking an image to illustrate a story by Donatella Lorch about the Sudan famine.

Nancy Buirski, the newspaper's picture editor on the foreign desk, called Marinovich, who told her about "an image of a vulture stalking a starving child who had collapsed in the sand."

Carter's photo was published in the 26 March 1993 edition.[16] The caption read:

"A little girl, weakened from hunger, collapsed recently along the trail to a feeding center in Ayod. Nearby, a vulture waited."[4]

This first publication in The New York Times "caused a sensation", Marinovich wrote, adding, "It was being used in posters for raising funds for aid organisations.

Papers and magazines around the world had published it, and the immediate public reaction was to send money to any humanitarian organisation that had an operation in Sudan."[17]

Claiming responsible ethical behaviour of photographers, publishers and the viewers of such photographs of shocking scenes, cultural writer Susan Sontag wrote in her essay Regarding the Pain of Others (2003):[18]

"There is shame as well as shock in looking at the close-up of a real horror.
Perhaps the only people with the right to look at images of suffering of this extreme order are those who could do something to alleviate it … or those who could learn from it.
The rest of us are voyeurs, whether or not we mean to be."[19]

Special editorial

Due to the public reaction and questions about the child's condition, The New York Times published a special editorial in its 30 March 1993 edition, which said in part,

"A picture last Friday with an article about the Sudan showed a little Sudanese girl who had collapsed from hunger on the trail to a feeding center in Ayod.
   A vulture lurked behind her.
Many readers have asked about the fate of the girl.
The photographer reports that she recovered enough to resume her trek after the vulture was chased away.
It is not known whether she reached the center."[20]

Aftermath

Four months after being awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, Carter died of suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning on 27 July 1994 at age 33.[24][25]

Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa, wrote of Carter,

"And we know a little about the cost of being traumatized that drove some to suicide, that, yes, these people were human beings operating under the most demanding of conditions."[26]

Kevin Carter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kevin Carter (13 September 1960 – 23 July 1994)[1] was a South African photojournalist and member of the Bang-Bang Club.

He was the recipient in 1994 of a Pulitzer Prize for his photograph depicting the 1993 famine in Sudan.

He died of carbon monoxide poisoning at the age of 33.

His story is depicted in the book The Bang-Bang Club,[2] written by Greg Marinovich and João Silva and published in 2000.

Pulitzer Prize photograph in Sudan

Carter shot an image of what appeared to be a little girl, fallen to the ground from hunger, while a vulture lurked on the ground nearby.

He told Silva he was shocked by the situation he had just photographed, and had chased the vulture away.

A few minutes later, Carter and Silva boarded a small UN plane and left Ayod for Kongor.[13]

Sold to The New York Times, the photograph first appeared on 26 March 1993, and syndicated worldwide.

Hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask the fate of the girl.

The paper said that according to Carter, "she recovered enough to resume her trek after the vulture was chased away" but that it was unknown whether she reached the UN food center.[14]

In April 1994, the photograph won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.[15][16]

In 2011, the child's father revealed the child was actually a boy, Kong Nyong, and had been taken care of by the UN food aid station.

Nyong had died four years prior, c. 2007, of "fevers", according to his family.[17]

Other work

In March 1994, Carter took a photograph of the three Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging members being shot during their abortive invasion of Bophuthatswana just before the South African election.

Carter ran out of film halfway through the incident.

Eamonn McCabe of The Guardian said: "It was a picture that made nearly every front page in the world, the one real photograph of the whole campaign."[18]

Death

Four months after being awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, Carter died of suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning on 27 July 1994 at age 33.[19][20]

Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, South Africa, wrote of Carter,

"And we know a little about the cost of being traumatized that drove some to suicide, that, yes, these people were human beings operating under the most demanding of conditions."[21]

"I'm really, really sorry. The pain of life overrides the joy to the point that joy does not exist.
…depressed … without phone … money for rent … money for child support … money for debts … money!!!
… I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain
… of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners
… I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky."

URA Facebook account disabled on March 24, 2020 over Greg Krasovsky's COVID-19 post!

March 26, 2020

Dear Readers,

On March 24, 2020 Facebook disabled without warning the account of Gregory Krasovsky, the founder of The Ukrainian-Russian-American Observer.

As a result, the following Facebook pages registered by Greg Krasovsky and linked to his account have been "disappeared"from/by Facebook.

- The Ukrainian-Russian-American Observer page: https://www.facebook.com/URA.Observer/

- The Law Offices of Gregory Krasovsky (Washington, DC): https://www.facebook.com/krasovsky911/

(Юридическая консультация Григория Красовского): https://www.facebook.com/krasovsky112/

- Greg Krasovsky's personal Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/gkrasovsky
FYI, Greg Krasovsky is a dual US-Russian citizen and a practicing lawyer in both the United States and Russia.

He was born in Moscow, Russia in 1968 and spent the first 4 years of his life in Eastern Ukraine's Donetsk Coal Basin, namely Lugansk Region.

Since then Greg has spent have of his life in Russia (22 years) and the other half (23 years) in the United States. he also managed to live in Vienna, Austria for over a year before coming to the United States and settling in Philadelphia, PA.

So why did Facebook disable Greg's account without notice on the 24th?

Because Greg, having logged into his Facebook account from Moscow, Russia made an informative post on the COVID-19, the Wuhan Coronavirus (see below).

Now that you have read this post, do you think it was improper or in violation of Facebook rules & policies?

Regardless, after posting it on his personal Facebook page, Greg decided to share this post with his community groups at

1. Columbia University, where he received a BA in Political Science in 1991

     - Columbia College Class of 1991 page

     - Columbia College Class of 1990 page (Greg's original year)

2. Central High School of Philadelphia, where he received his high school diploma (CHS is the only HS in the U.S. that awards a Bachelor of Arts degree!)

     - The Official Central High School in Philadelphia Alumni Group

     - Central High School in Philadelphia.

Apparently, such brazen activity was enough to trigger some Facebook protocol -- probably designed to fight those ominous Kremlin-controlled Russian Trolls that spread dissent and division among Americans -- which probably immediately declared Russian-American attorney Greg Krasovsky a violator Facebook policies and a threat to the Facebook ecosystem.

That's Facebook censorship for you!

After his account was disabled, Greg tried to follow recommended Facebook protocol for asking a review of his disabled account.

Unfortunately, the only thing that Facebook allowed Greg to do was to upload a photo of his U.S. passport with a subsequent promise to contact him by email shortly.

So now the only recourse that Greg has to restore his Facebook pages is to sue Facebook either in the U.S. or in Russia.

Why did Greg post his article on COVID-19, a very important and sensitive topic today?

Could Greg's previous life & work experience, including at the following places, have given him interest and insight into the COVID-19 pandemic?

***

Here's some of Greg Krasovsky's past work & volunteer experience:

Did Greg's work as an emergency responder (Police, Fire and EMS) and a disaster-relief volunteer create a life-long desire to help others by sharing in his Facebook community what he considered to be pertinent & important information?

Do we want people like Greg to share with us such information on Facebook regarding COVID-19?

Is this constitutionally protected free-speech?

Should Facebook have the power to unilaterally censor and banish its users, including those who have spent serious amounts of money on Facebook advertising for their businesses?

If you believe that such capricious Facebook banishment and censorship is improper and unwarranted, then please speak up!

Share this post among your friends and let Facebook know how you feel!

Also, please feel free to reach out to Greg Krasovsky by phone at +1-202-558-5287 or by email at <krasovsky911[at]gmail.com> and let him know you position and advice on this issue!

Bad news and good news re Covid-19

A. Good News:

1. "...our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is significantly associated with viral load reduction / disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its effect is reinforced by azithromycin."

2, High Dose IV Vitamin C treatments seem to help too!

3. Alcohol (>30%) kills coronavirus -- seems to dissolve its fatty shell.

4. The LA Times Video "The Science Behind the Coronavirus, the complete series" gives good overview of Covid-19.

5. China's successful battle with Covid-19, especially in Wuhan & its surrounding province, shows that we can beat this thing with strict epidemiological control measures (quarantine, isolation & social distancing).

6. No matter how bad Covid-19 is, it's still not as bad as the Spanish Flu of 1918 (which seems to have originated from a U.S. pig farm in Kansas).

B. Bad News:

1. Just look at today's numbers on Covid-19's spread.

2. The data from Wuhan shows how difficult it is to treat this thing.

3. 1/3 of Covid-19 carriers (and transmitters) don't show symptoms.

4. Unless we're ready and able to implement a simultaneous world-wide 4 to 6 week strict quarantine, we may not be able to stop the virus' spread and periodic reappearance domestically and from abroad.

So what do you think?

Information for Clinicians on Therapeutic Options for COVID-19 Patients

There are no US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs specifically for the treatment of patients with COVID-19.
At present clinical management includes infection prevention and control measures and supportive care, including supplementary oxygen and mechanical ventilatory support when indicated.  An array of drugs approved for other indications as well as several investigational drugs are being studied in several hundred clinical trials that are underway across the globe. The purpose of this document is to provide information on two of the approved drugs (chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine) and one of the investigational agents (remdesivir) currently in use in the United States.

Remdesivir

Remdesivir is an investigational intravenous drug with broad antiviral activity that inhibits viral replication through premature termination of RNA transcription and has in-vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2 and in-vitro and in-vivo activity against related betacoronaviruses [1-3].

Finally, in areas without clinical trials, COVID-19 patients in the United States and other countries have been treated with remdesivir on an uncontrolled compassionate use basis. The manufacturer is currently transitioning the provision of emergency access to remdesivir from individual compassionate use requests to an expanded access program.  The expanded access program for the United States is under rapid development. Further information is available at: https://rdvcu.gilead.com/external icon

Hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine

Due to higher in-vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2 and its wider availability in the United States compared with chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine has been administered to hospitalized COVID-19 patients on an uncontrolled basis in multiple countries, including in the United States. One small study reported that hydroxychloroquine alone or in combination with azithromycin reduced detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory tract specimens compared with a non-randomized control group but did not assess clinical benefit [7]. Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are associated with QT prolongation and caution is advised when considering these drugs in patients with chronic medical conditions (e.g. renal failure, hepatic disease) or who are receiving medications that might interact to cause arrythmias.

Hydroxychloroquine is currently under investigation in clinical trials for pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and treatment of patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19. In the United States, several clinical trials of hydroxychloroquine for prophylaxis or treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection are planned or will be enrolling soon.  More information on trials can be found at:  https://clinicaltrials.gov/external icon.

Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin as a treatment of COVID-19: results of an open-label non-randomized clinical trial.

Patients and methods
French Confirmed COVID-19 patients were included in a single arm protocol from early March to March 16th, to receive 600mg of hydroxychloroquine daily and their viral load in nasopharyngeal swabs was tested daily in a hospital setting.

Depending on their clinical presentation, azithromycin was added to the treatment. Untreated patients from another center and cases refusing the protocol were included as negative controls. Presence and absence of virus at Day6-post inclusion was considered the end point.

Results
Six patients were asymptomatic, 22 had upper respiratory tract infection symptoms and eight had lower respiratory tract infection symptoms.

Twenty cases were treated in this study and showed a significant reduction of the viral carriage at D6-post inclusion compared to controls, and much lower average carrying duration than reported of untreated patients in the literature. Azithromycin added to hydroxychloroquine was significantly more efficient for virus elimination.

Conclusion
Despite its small sample size our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is significantly associated with viral load reduction/disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its effect is reinforced by azithromycin.

Use of high dose intravenous vitamin C (IVC) in the treatment of moderate to severe cases of Covid-19 patients.

A group of medical doctors, healthcare providers and scientists met online March 17, 2020, to discuss the use of high dose intravenous vitamin C (IVC) in the treatment of moderate to severe cases of Covid-19 patients.

Dr. Enqian Mao was in attendance, he is the chief of emergency medicine department at Ruijin Hospital, a major hospital in Shanghai, affiliated with the Joatong University College of Medicine. Dr. Mao is also a member of the Senior Expert Team at the Shanghai Public Health Center, where all Covid-19 patients have been treated.

Dr. Mao stated that his group treated about 50 cases of moderate to severe cases of Covid-19 infection with high dose IVC. Dosing of IVC ranged from 10,000 mg – 20,000 mg a day for 7-10 days, with 10,000 mg for moderate cases and 20,000 for more severe cases. The first bit of good news was that all patients who received IVC improved and there was no mortality. Secondly, as compared to the average of a 30-day hospital stay for all Covid-19 patients, those patients who received high dose IVC had a hospital stay about 3-5 days shorter than the overall patients.

Dr. Mao also discussed one particularly severe case where the patient was deteriorating rapidly. An extra of 50,000 mg IVC dosage was given over a period of 4 hours and it caused the patient’s pulmonary (oxygenation index) status to stabilize and improve as the critical care team watched in real time.

Spanish Flu: a warning from history
Cambridge University
Nov 30, 2018

100 years ago, celebrations marking the end of the First World War were cut short by the onslaught of a devastating disease - the 1918-19 influenza pandemic.

Its early origins and initial geographical starting point still remain a mystery but in the Summer of 1918, there was a second wave of a far more virulent form of the influenza virus than anyone could have anticipated.

Soon dubbed ‘Spanish Flu’ after its effects were reported in the country’s newspapers, the virus rapidly spread across much of the globe to become one of the worst natural disasters in human history.

To mark the centenary and to highlight vital scientific research, the University of Cambridge has made a new film exploring what we have learnt about Spanish Flu, the urgent threat posed by influenza today, and how scientists are preparing for future pandemics.
